Cittaslow is an international network of towns where the quality of life really matters. It grew from the Slow Food movement in Italy. Cittaslow provides a set of goals and aspirations for small towns based on the following principles:

  • encourage diversity not standardisation
  • support and encourage local culture and traditions
  • work for a more sustainable environment
  • support and encourage local produce and products
  • encourage healthy living especially through children and young people
  • work with the local community to build these values

The principles are underpinned by a series of 55 goals that aim to involve the local community in taking practical actions to enhance the environment, infrastructure, local products, hospitality, and profile of a town.

In each region the first Cittaslow town guides other towns that may also be interested, and nominates a representative to help at national level – Andrea Mearns represents Mold on the Cittaslow UK Board. Networking with the other Cittaslow towns is enabling Mold to share national and international best practice.
